Milton’s strategic focus on higher-density housing, post-secondary education, and a balanced economy is building a more diverse, resilient, and connected community.
A recent Council report highlights significant progress in these priority areas—part of the Town’s commitment to well-planned, sustainable growth.
“Planned growth is positioning Milton as a progressive, vibrant, and thriving community,” said Jill Hogan, Commissioner, Development Services, Town of Milton. “By investing in housing, education, and economic growth, we’re ensuring an excellent quality of life for both current and future residents.”
Housing
Milton is increasing housing options by concentrating higher-density developments along major routes. This approach creates more choices at a range of price points while supporting transit use and walkable neighbourhoods.
While the Town does not build or manage housing, it creates the conditions for growth through long-term planning, facilitating approvals, and issuing permits. Work is also underway on a comprehensive Housing Strategy.
One key example is Uptown, a new mixed-use, transit-supportive community within a 10-minute walk of Milton GO Station. The project is transforming the area into a complete, accessible, and walkable hub.
Milton continues to exceed its provincial housing targets. Ontario assigned the Town a goal of facilitating construction of 21,000 homes by 2031. In 2023 and 2024, Milton reached 126 per cent and 129 per cent of its annual targets respectively, securing additional provincial infrastructure funding.
Education
In 2024, construction began on the Milton Education Village (MEV), a cornerstone of the Town’s Milton 2051 vision.
The MEV will integrate post-secondary education, long-term care, recreation, and active transportation options, giving residents more opportunities to learn, work, and thrive locally.
Conestoga College and Wilfrid Laurier University opened interim campuses in Milton in 2024 as part of their long-term plans to establish permanent sites within the MEV. Together, these campuses are expected to serve more than 3,000 students, expanding access to post-secondary education in one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities.
Business
Milton is delivering on its commitment to fiscal responsibility by balancing residential and non-residential growth, helping to stabilize the property tax base.
In 2024, the Town facilitated 2.8 million square feet of Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) development, bringing new employers such as Kioti Tractors and HPG to the Derry Green Corporate Business Park.
Since 2021, Milton’s economy has grown faster than that of comparable municipalities, adding nearly 800 new businesses with employees—a 22 per cent increase.
