As the new school year approaches, the Town of Milton reminds motorists, cyclists, and pedestriansto stay alert and follow road safety rules.

Starting Monday, Aug. 25, school zone flashing lights will be activated to remind drivers that students will return to school in September.Drivers must reduce their speed to 40 km/h near designated schools when lights are flashing.

“Each September, it’s important to be alert as roads get busier with some of our youngest road users,” said Mayor Gord Krantz. “Let’s be road wise and follow traffic rules so that we can protect students, their families, and our entire community.

Pedestrian crossings

Students and families should use pedestrian crossings when available. These are often located at intersections with pedestrian signals or marked crosswalks and helppedestrians cross safely.

Some pedestrian crossings have rectangular rapid flashing lights. Pedestrians should press the button to activate the flashing lightand wait until vehicles stop before crossing. Learn more about pedestrian crossings on the Town’s website

Crossing guards

Crossing guards help children and other pedestrians safely cross near elementary schools by temporarily stopping traffic.

When a crossing guard raises their sign, driversin all directions must stop and wait until the guard and pedestrians are completely off the road before proceeding.

School drop-off zones (Kiss and Rides)

Some schools have designated drop-off zones to improve safety and reduce congestion. Obey all signs in these areas.

These zones may be prioritized for kindergarten students and children with special needs. By-law staff monitor these zones and use licence plate recognition (LPR).
