Voter eligibility

You can vote for the Ward 1 Town Councillor if you are:
  • A Canadian citizen; and
  • At least 18 years old; and
  • A resident of Ward 1 (view map); or
  • Not a resident in the Town of Milton, but you or your spouse own or rent property in Ward 1; and
  • Not prohibited from voting under any law.

You can only vote once, no matter how many properties you own or rent in Ward 1.

Review eligibility to vote according to 2022 Voters’ Guide – Ontario municipal council and school board elections. 

Under section 65 (4) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, a person is not eligible to vote in a by-election if they could not vote for that office during a regular election held on the same day.

You cannot vote if you are:

  • An inmate serving a sentence sentence in a penal or correctional institution
  • A corporation
  • Acting as executor or trustee or in another representative capacity, except as a voting proxy
  • Convicted of a corrupt practice described in section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996

Register to vote

Eligible Ward 1 residents can visit RegisterToVoteON.ca to confirm or update their information on the Elections Ontario Register.

 How to vote

There are three days of in-person voting:
  • Advance Vote: Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Advance Vote: Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Election Day: Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Information about voting locations will be posted soon. This information will also be included on voter information cards mailed to eligible voters.  

Appoint a voting proxy

If you cannot vote in person, you may appoint a voting proxy to vote for you—someone you trust who is an eligible voter in the Town of Milton.

To appoint a proxy:

  • Complete a Voting Proxy Appointment Form signed by you and your proxy.
  • Have it certified by the Town Clerk or designated election official by 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2025, at Town Hall (150 Mary St.) or at advance voting locations.
  • Bring identification for yourself and your proxy.

To obtain a form, contact the Town of Milton Election Team or visit Town Hall during regular business hours (Monday to Friday).

Important notes:

  • A voting proxy may only vote for one non-family member, but can vote for multiple relatives such as a spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent, or grandchild. Separate proxy forms are required for each voter.
  • A person acting as an executor or trustee must also complete a certified Voting Proxy Appointment Form.

 Identification

You must bring one piece of identification that shows your name and Ward 1 address.
  • A Voter Information Card cannot be used as ID.
  • You cannot use a passport as ID because it does not show your address.

Examples of acceptable ID

  • A document issued electronically, a hard copy or online version shown on a mobile device IS acceptable as ID (for example: an e-statement).
  • Driver's License
  • A photocopy or scanned version of a physically issued document IS NOT acceptable as ID (for example: a photocopy of your driver’s license).

Voter information cards will be mailed to eligible voters. Information about mailing dates will be posted soon.

Curbside voting

If you are physically unable to go inside the voting place, you can request to have your ballot brought to your vehicle, outside of the building, or to another area within the voting place. 

Personal assistance to voters

If you require assistance at the voting place you may bring a friend along to help or you may ask an election official for assistance. Your friend may go behind the voting screen with you; however, they must make a declaration first.
