A building permit is required in Milton for new exterior openings, such as windows, doors, egress windows and below grade entrances installed on the exterior of a house or building.

In order to add windows or doors to your home, you’ll need to apply for a building permit.

You’ll need to submit the following forms:

Construction drawings

Please submit the following construction drawings with your application:

  • A Site Plan showing property lines and lot area with proposed openings and distances from property lines and other structures
  • A Floor Plan showing all existing openings and proposed openings drawn to scale
  • A details page showing window and door type, swing, size, glazing and elevation
  • A well section page to show lentil sizes, flashings, air/vapour barrier, drainage requirements and integration with cladding

Zoning requirements

Review the Zoning By-law before applying to make sure you follow all building guidelines for your property. For example, any exterior stairs required for a new door must meet the minimum setback requirements from the lot lines, including the:

  • Front
  • Rear
  • Side (interior or exterior)

Book a building inspection

Throughout the project, you must book a building inspection. Typical exterior opening inspections include:

  • Framing
  • Insulation and air barrier
  • Final building
